WASHINGTON, April 24 (UPI) -- The Obama administration plans to admit into the United States as many as seven Chinese Muslims imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay, U.S. officials say.
It would be the first release of any of the detainees into the United States, the Los Angeles Times said.
President Obama said during his first week in office he wanted to close the Cuba-based prison and relocate the detainees. Administration officials believe settling some in this country would set a good example for other nations.
Observers say there likely would be opposition to the move, including challenges from the Homeland Security Department and from the public.
The move also could upset Chinese officials who consider the Chinese detainees to be domestic terrorists.
