Turbulence hurts 11 on Air Canada flight

MONTREAL, April 24 (UPI) -- Eleven people aboard an Air Canada flight from Sydney to Vancouver were injured Friday by turbulence that resulted in an unscheduled stop in Honolulu.

The airline, in a statement from its headquarters in Montreal, said Flight AC34 had 256 passengers and 17 crew members on board when it encountered major turbulence about an hour east of Honolulu around 6 a.m. EDT.

"Nine passengers and two flight attendants requiring medical attention for minor injuries were treated on site and released to continue their journey," the statement said. "Two passengers and two flight attendants remained in Honolulu for further assessment for minor injuries."

The four who remained behind were cleared to return to Canada later in the day, the airline said.

Air Canada said the seatbelt sign was on when the Boeing 777-200LR hit the turbulence.

The aircraft was inspected by ground a crew in Honolulu and cleared to continue on, the statement said.
