Atlanta jail guards charged with beating

ATLANTA, April 23 (UPI) -- Two lieutenants at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta were charged with beating an inmate, one of them allegedly doing it when the man was cuffed and in chains.

Earl Glenn and Robert Hill entered not guilty pleas to the federal charges, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Thursday. They are the second and third guards to be arrested in an FBI investigation into brutality at the jail.

Both men face a long list of charges, including lying to the FBI, while Glenn allegedly asked other guards to "stick with the story" when they were questioned.

Hill, during roll call Aug. 8, allegedly told other guards that inmates who touched an officer should end up in the hospital. Later that day, Glenn allegedly beat inmate Nathaniel Trammell, and Hill allegedly struck Trammell again while he was in the medical unit in chains waiting to go to the hospital.

Deputy Curtis Jerome Brown Jr. was arrested in March. In March 2008, he allegedly beat a mentally ill inmate who died a few hours after he was found unconscious.
