WASHINGTON, April 23 (UPI) -- Apple Inc. has removed "Baby Shaker," a controversial software game, from the marketplace, officials said.

The application encouraged iPhone users to shake the digital device to quiet down a screaming baby with animation while making it clear it was not urging the baby itself be shaken.

But the reaction was so intense, The Washington Times said, that Apple removed the software from the market after only three days. There appeared to be too many people who feared the title would be taken literally.

The pitch ended with a disclaimer: "Never, never shake a baby."

Marilyn Barr, founder of the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome, in Ogden, Utah, was one who expressed horror over the software.

"Not only are they making fun of shaken-baby syndrome, but they are actually encouraging it," she said. "This is absolutely terrible."
