WASHINGTON, April 19 (UPI) -- Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Sunday she regrets the politicization of a report that right-wing extremists are recruiting U.S. troops.
The federal department's report, which was sent to law enforcement agencies, said domestic extremist groups are targeting disgruntled U.S. troops as they return home from Afghanistan and Iraq.
In an appearance on CNN's "State of the Union" program, Napolitano said groups trying to woo angry service members are "too numerous" to mention.
"We have a threat of terrorism within our own shores, and one of the groups being targeted to see if they will be aligned with that are some of our veterans," she said.
Napolitano said parts of the report have been misinterpreted.
"The report is not saying that veterans are extremists. Far from it," she said. "What it is saying is returning veterans are targets of right-wing extremist groups that are trying to recruit those to commit violent acts within the country. We want to do all we can to prevent that."
