EVANSVILLE, Ind., April 18 (UPI) -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says giving birth to a child with Down syndrome strengthened her opposition to abortion, regardless of the circumstances.
Speaking to an anti-abortion audience in Evansville, Ind., this week Palin said she considered "for a fleeting moment" having an abortion after learning her son Trig would have Down syndrome, The Washington Post reported Saturday.
She then decided she had to "walk the walk" concerning her long-standing anti-abortion views, Palin Thursday night told an audience of 3,000 at the Vanderburgh County Right to Life banquet.
"I had just enough faith to know that my trying to change the circumstances wasn't any answer," said Palin, the Republican Party's 2008 vice presidential candidate.
Palin said her "moment of doubt" lets me understand a woman's, a girl's temptation to maybe try to make it all go away."
Contacted by the Post, Elizabeth Shipp, political director of Pro-Choice, said every woman deserves the chance to make her own choice.
"If I didn't know any better, I'd say Governor Palin sounds remarkably pro-choice," Shipp said.
