WASHINGTON, April 15 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle had an adjusted gross income of $2,656,902 in 2008, the White House said Wednesday.
The Obamas paid $855,323 in federal income tax. They paid 77,883 in state income taxes to Illinois, a statement said.
Most of the first family's 2008 income is the proceeds from the successful sales of the president's books.
The Obamas also reported donating $172,050 to 37 different charities. The largest reported gifts to charity were $25,000 contributions to Catholic Relief Services and the United Negro College Fund.
In all, the couple donated to charity more than 6 percent of their adjusted gross income, the statement said.
