Bangladesh celebrates new year

DAHKA, Bangladesh, April 14 (UPI) -- Hundreds of thousands of Bangladeshis rang in their new year without incident and amid tight security in the capital city, police in Dahka said.

The colorful revelers Monday welcomed the year 1416 after passing through security gates and metal detectors, and being sniffed by police bomb dogs, The Daily Star reported.

Security measures included 80 closed circuit televisions and an estimated 10,000 police officers on round-the-clock surveillance, the Star reported Tuesday.

In recent months, incidents of civil unrest and a mutiny by border patrol guards have threatened the new government of Sheik Hasina after two years of military-backed emergency rule.

The new year's celebration was introduced by Mughal Emperor Akbar who ruled the region from 1556 to 1605.
