COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, April 12 (UPI) -- Sri Lanka's president Sunday ordered his troops to withhold fire against Tamil Tiger rebels during a two-day celebration of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
The temporary halt in fighting will allow thousands of Tamils trapped by the conflict to travel during celebrations that begin Monday, said President Mahinda Rajapakse.
In a push into northern Sri Lanka, Rajapakse's army has seized control of large tracts of land from Tamil Tiger rebels who have been fighting for an independent homeland since 1983, CNN reported.
Sri Lanka's civil war has left more than 700,000 dead.
