Senators to visit Arizona over violence

PHOENIX, April 12 (UPI) -- Members of a U.S. Senate committee will be in Arizona next week to hear testimony on border violence, officials said.

The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs will hear testimony April 20 from Gov. Jan Brewer, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and officials from border communities, The Arizona Republic reported Sunday.

The newspaper reported the hearing comes as a drug war escalates south of the border.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, a former Arizona governor, has said she plans to send more than 100 federal agents to the border to guard against a northward surge in the violence, which has left hundreds dead in northern Mexico.

The public can submit testimony to the office of Sen. John McCain, the Arizona Republican's spokesman said.
