MEXICO CITY, April 10 (UPI) -- Mexico City officials report closing a main water line serving millions of residents during Easter weekend because of low reserves.
Around 5 million people, or a quarter of the capital city's population, were affected, the BBC said. The closure is expected to last 36 hours.
Unusually low rainfall last year and major leakage were blamed for leaving reservoirs less than half full.
Hundreds of water trucks were deployed in worst affected areas.
It is the third time this year that rationing is needed for an area once known as a floating city built on a spectacular chain of volcanic lakes.
