MIAMI, April 10 (UPI) -- About a dozen United States advocacy groups are using the foreclosure crisis to move homeless people into vacant houses, a spokesman said.

Michael Stoops, executive director of the National Coalition for the Homeless, says some organizations are working in secret while others are operating openly, The New York Times reported Friday.

In Miami, a group called Take Back the Land screens potential residents for mental illness and drug addiction before moving them into an abandoned property.

"We change the locks. We pull up with a truck and move in through the front door," said Max Rameau, executive director.

Rameau said his group locates properties by checking foreclosure listings.

In Minnesota, a group called Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign recently moved families into 13 empty homes.

Other groups, including Women in Transition in Louisville, Ky., are on the lookout for properties to occupy.
