Fire destroys 120 Montreal condominiums

MONTREAL, April 10 (UPI) -- A four-alarm fire Friday morning destroyed at least 120 condominiums under construction in east-end Montreal, firefighters said.

Fire Department Chief of Operations Jean Leblanc told The Gazette newspaper the alarm came in around 5:40 a.m. Friday and three calls for support were made as six buildings were involved.

The fire covered two city blocks and spread quickly because of the amount of wood and other combustibles, Leblanc said.

Some 80 firefighters were on the scene, he said.

No injuries were reported and Leblanc said it was too early to speculate on a cause for the blaze. However, he said damage would easily surpass $1 million, the newspaper said.
