Chase ends when police shoot, kill driver

SANTA ANA, Calif., April 10 (UPI) -- A Santa Ana, Calif., police officer shot and killed a woman Friday, ending a high-speed chase during which the woman carried a toddler in her car, police said.

The woman, whose name has not been disclosed, was suspected of driving under the influence with an 18-month-old child in the backseat, the Los Angeles Times reported. Beginning around 12:30 a.m., she fled from police at speeds up to 100 mph and rammed her car into a number of police vehicles, police said.

The chase ended when police blocked a street and an officer shot the woman, Santa Ana Police Department Commander Tammy Franks said. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 18-month-old was taken to Orangewood Children's Home, Franks said. The child was not harmed in the shooting.

The chase began when a police officer saw a driver committing "two moving violations," Buena Park, Calif., police spokesman Sgt. William Kohanek said. The officer said he suspected the driver was under the influence and tried to pull her over, but she kept going -- leading police through Anaheim, Fullerton, Tustin and finally to Santa Ana, where the chase ended with her death.
