BART eyeing fare increases, service cuts

SAN FRANCISCO, April 10 (UPI) -- The Bay Area Rapid Transit system for the San Francisco area says it is considering increasing fares while cutting back on its services.

BART General Manager Dorothy Dugger said as a result of the economic downturn, the transport group may increase its fares by 10 percent and cut back on services on Sundays and at night, The San Francisco Chronicle said Friday.

"BART, like every other organization, business and, probably, family, is feeling the effect of this terrible economy," Dugger said.

Under the proposed fare increases set to take effect July 1, the minimum one-way BART fare would increase to $1.65 while the maximum would rise to $8.65.

The current minimum cost for a one-way journey on the heavy-rail system is $1.25 while the maximum rests at $7.45, BART Fares and Schedules brochures said.

Dugger told the Chronicle the service cuts would make trains run every 20 minutes Monday through Saturday starting at 7 p.m. along with all day Sunday. BART trains currently run once every 15 minutes.
