Man gets liver transplant despite blizzard

AURORA, Colo., April 9 (UPI) -- A 59-year-old man says he underwent a life-saving liver transplant in Aurora, Colo., thanks to the kindness of others during a heavy blizzard.

Vietnam War veteran Chuck Forbes of Meeteetse, Wyo., said after learning a liver was available for him at the University of Colorado Hospital, he was faced with the daunting task of traveling in the middle of a snowstorm, The Denver Post said Thursday.

First, Forbes' wife, Ruth, contacted Wyoming state trooper Chuck Bloom to ask for assistance in traveling to Colorado Saturday.

Bloom, in turn, contacted the Wyoming Department of Transportation, which sent snowplow operator Rick Schultz to drive ahead of the couple all the way to the Colorado-Wyoming border.

"I knew it was going to be dangerous but a gentleman's life was on the line," Schultz told the Post of the blizzard that significantly limited road visibility.

Forbes, who underwent his surgery Sunday, told the Post he truly owes Schultz and the drivers of the four additional snowplows who aided him in his journey.

"I owe each one of them a hug, a handshake and a big steak," Forbes said.
