WASHINGTON, April 9 (UPI) -- U.S. Vice President Joe Biden's mother was reported recovering well in a Philadelphia hospital from surgery for a hip fracture.

Jean Biden, 91, injured in a fall at her son's estate in Greenville, Del., was operated on Wednesday at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday, Biden spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander told the Gannett Washington bureau.

Surgeons attached a plate-and-screw device to her hip. Alexander said Jean Biden's doctors were pleased with her progress.
