Dozen anti-terror arrests made in Britain

LONDON, April 8 (UPI) -- British authorities said Wednesday they arrested a dozen men in early counter-terrorism raids after a document about the investigations was disclosed.

Bob Quick, a top anti-terrorism police officer, said he "deeply regretted that he showed the secret document to photographers at a briefing.

The disclosure of the document resulted in the raids at eight addresses across northwestern England being executed sooner than planned, the BBC said.

Liberal members of Parliament called Quick "accident prone" and Conservatives faulted him for his "extraordinary and very alarming" lapse of judgment.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith had no comment about the officer's mistake but lauded police for their professionalism.

Most of those taken into custody are Pakistan-born nationals on student visas and one is a native of the United Kingdom. They ranged from a teenager to a 41-year-old man.
