LONDON, April 8 (UPI) -- Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, a recent convert to Roman Catholicism, says the church should reconsider its attitude toward homosexuals.
In an interview with a gay magazine, Attitude, Blair said he believes there has been a "quiet revolution in thinking" among younger Catholics, The Times of London reported Wednesday. He suggested that Pope Benedict XVI, who has called homosexuality a "tendency" that leads to an "intrinsic moral evil," is out of step with many in his flock.
"There are many good and great things the Catholic Church does, and there are many fantastic things this pope stands for, but I think what is interesting is that if you went into any Catholic Church, particularly a well attended one, on any Sunday here and did a poll of the congregation, you'd be surprised at how liberal-minded people were," Blair said.
Blair said he expects Islam to become more accepting of gays, as well.
After he stepped down as prime minister in 2007, Blair made a long-predicted move from the Church of England.
