ABUJA, Nigeria, April 6 (UPI) -- U.S. diplomatic missions in Nigeria are under threat of possible terrorist attacks, embassy officials warned Monday.

A statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja indicated security was increased in the capital of Abuja and in Lagos after a threat was received, CNN reported.

"As a result of this information, Nigerian police have heightened their vigilance along Walter Carrington Crescent (site of the U.S. consular offices in Lagos) and are monitoring traffic more closely," the statement read.

The embassy declined to provide any more information to the U.S. broadcaster, but urged U.S. citizens in Abuja and Lagos to be cognizant of their surroundings.
