STOCKHOLM, Sweden, April 6 (UPI) -- Members of the Sweden Democrats political party sang racist songs during a party conference, a source alleges.
An unidentified undercover reporter alleges top Sweden Democrats members, including party leader Jimmie Akesson, sang songs by white power bands while taking a ferry to Estonia in January, the Swedish news agency Tidningarnas Telegrambyra reported Monday.
SDU Chairman Erik Almqvist acknowledged party members sang communist and socialist songs during the conference but downplayed any significance of the musical acts.
"Our young people are political and like music of this nature. It is fun after one has drunk a few beers," Almqvist told TT.
"It is not serious, none of us have put any political value on this whatsoever."
"It can be construed as poor judgment, especially in the current media climate where we are misquoted and exposed for just one type of extremist music but not another," he added regarding the claim by the Sveriges Radio's Kaliber program reporter. "We will therefore have to apply sounder judgment in the future."
