SALT LAKE CITY, April 6 (UPI) -- Bishop John Wester of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City is to undergo surgery for prostate cancer, one of his colleagues says.

The Rev. Andrzej Skrzypiec said Sunday the 58-year-old Wester's chances for recovery after the upcoming surgery appear to be good thanks to an early cancer diagnosis, The Salt Lake Tribune said.

"His prognosis is good since they found (the cancer) early," Skrzypiec said.

Skrzypiec took time during his Sunday announcement at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Magna, Utah, to praise Wester's work with victims of injustice and immigrants.

The Tribune said similar announcements regarding Wester's surgery Wednesday were made at churches throughout the Salt Lake City diocese.
