COPENHAGEN, Denmark, April 5 (UPI) -- Finance Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen was named the new prime minister of Denmark Sunday.

Rasmussen, 44, succeeds Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who resigned to head up the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Financial Times reported. He is the third straight Danish prime minister with the same surname but he is not related to his predecessors.

The new prime minister is the designated leader of the Liberal Party Venstre. He previously served as interior and health minister.

Rasmussen has been a member of the Danish parliament since 1994.
