CHICAGO, April 4 (UPI) -- Prominent Chicago defense attorney Terence Gillespie says he can no longer represent former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, citing a conflict of interest.
Gillespie, who emerged only weeks ago as Blagojevich's new lead attorney, says a conflict has emerged with a previous commitment to represent state government power broker William Cellini, and so he must drop his work for Blagojevich, the Chicago Tribune reported Saturday.
Gillespie said the conflict developed when federal prosecutors added Blagojevich to an existing indictment against Cellini, who is accused of shaking down a would-be state contractor, allegedly demanding the firm contribute $1.5 million to Blagojevich's re-election campaign in return for state business.
"I never had imagined the Cellini matter would be joined up with the Blagojevich case," Gillespie told the Tribune, adding that the conflict makes it problematic for him to represent the embattled former governor.
