Big rigs banned on California 2

LOS ANGELES, April 4 (UPI) -- Five-axle trucks have been banned temporarily from Southern California's Angel Crest Highway, where a runaway rig killed two, say Caltrans officials.

The mountainous highway, also known as California 2, is to be closed for at least 90 days while Caltrans officials determine how to improve safety leading to the 210 Freeway in La Canada Flintridge, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

Marcos Barbosa Costa, 43, of Massachusetts, was charged with vehicular manslaughter after his double-deck, car-carrying, truck crashed into several cars Wednesday before hitting a bookstore and killing Palmdale resident Angel Jorge Posca, 58 and his 12-year-old daughter, said the Los Angeles County district attorney's office. A dozen other people were injured in the Wednesday crash.

The truck reported had brake problems, the Times reported.

Last September, a tractor-trailer carrying 78,000 pounds of onions lost its brakes and crashed in a restaurant parking lot in the same area of Foothill Boulevard.
