Gates to unveil Pentagon budget request

WASHINGTON, April 3 (UPI) -- Budget decisions to be made during the weekend will signal a fundamental shift for the U.S. Defense, a Pentagon spokesman said Friday.

After more than three months of analysis, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates is expected to announce changes to the fiscal 2010 budget request during a news conference Monday, spokesman Geoff Morrell said in a news release.

"These are not changes to the margins," Morrell said. "A series of choices have been teed up for the secretary and he will spend the weekend making those decisions and putting the finishing touches on his recommendations to President (Barack) Obama."

Among other things, Gates is expected to look for more efficient production rates of production and economies of scale as he makes his decisions this weekend, Morrell said.
