LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE, Calif., April 2 (UPI) -- A large truck hauling cars hit several vehicles and then smashed into a bookstore in La Canada Flintridge, Calif., Wednesday killing two people, police said.

Several other people were injured in the 6 p.m. crash in the upscale Los Angeles County community of La Canada Flintridge, the Los Angeles Times reported.

KTLA-TV reported three of those hurt were in critical condition. The Los Angeles station said the driver of the semi-trailer rig and seven other people were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Fire Department spokesman Art Marrujo said it was not known whether the victims were in the bookstore or in the cars involved in the accident.

Other buildings also were damaged in the accident. It wasn't known why the truck driver lost control.

Lynn Tran, manager of a nearby wine and liquor store, said the first she and other employees became aware of the crash was when they heard "a noise that sounded like an earthquake. It shook a little bit."

Brandi Sjostrom, a waitress at a nearby cafe, said everyone ran outside when they heard the crash.

"It was pretty awful. I've never seen anything like that. I was pretty shaken up," Sjostrom said.
