Teen's trek to give voice to homeless kids

ORLANDO, Fla., April 1 (UPI) -- Teenager David Ashby says he will visit children in homeless shelters on his walk of empathy from Orlando, Fla., to Washington in June.

The 14-year-old plans to spend his summer trekking 1,100 miles to raise consciousness about the 1.5 million U.S. homeless children, the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported. He plans to meet them, hear their story, experience their hunger and difficulties, and ultimately voice their plight from the steps of the Capitol.

David has a Web site, helpingstepbystep.com, and support from the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida to raise donations for the trip.

Mom Allison Ashby says David will not go it alone. She is prepared to borrow against her 401(k) if sufficient funds are not raised and spend $2,500 on gas to follow him at 3 mph in her van, which will double as her motel room. David wants to sleep in the open while mom insists on a tent.
