Russia's Superjet completes test flight

MOSCOW, April 1 (UPI) -- A new type of Russian medium-haul airliner successfully completed its first long-distance test flight Wednesday, officials said.

The Superjet 100 airliner took off from Novosibirsk in Siberia and landed at an airfield near Moscow after covering nearly 1,900 miles, RIA Novosti reported.

The new passenger aircraft is being produced by Russia's Sukhoi Civil Aircraft company in cooperation with U.S. and European aviation companies such as Boeing, Snecma, Thales, Messier Dowty, Liebherr Aerospace and Honeywell, the news agency said.

Sukhoi has indicated it plans to hand over the first of 30 Superjet 100s to the Russian national carrier Aeroflot in December.
