LEAGUE CITY, Texas, April 1 (UPI) -- A handwritten apology note left at the scene of a deadly hit-and-run in Texas appears to be from a woman, police said.

The Houston Chronicle reported Wednesday that League City, Texas, police say the 20-word note, left Saturday near the body of hit-and-run victim Maurice Jones, 34, may have been written by a woman between 20 and 40 years old.

Sgt. David Hausam said police have not had the note examined by a handwriting analyst. The newspaper reported it was unclear how police had made the determination about who might have written the note.

"If nothing progresses it's going to be a step we will eventually take," Hausam said of seeking a formal handwriting analysis.

Jones died after being hit as he walked home from his job at a McDonald's restaurant about 2 miles from his home. Police said he was hit by a vehicle that swerved across the northbound lane.

The victim's mother, Roberta Jones, said she was told the note contained an apology.

"I am speechless. If you hit somebody's car you apologize, but when you kill a person that's a totally different story," she was quoted by the newspaper as saying.
