WARSAW, Poland, April 1 (UPI) -- Poland will end the army's compulsory draft next year in a move to turn the military fully professional.
New legislation would end the obligatory conscript draft Jan. 1 and create a National Reserve Force to be used in crisis situations, the Polish TheNews.pl website said.
Young conscripts drafted into the army in December are scheduled to leave the service in September.
Poland joined NATO in 1999, and in mid-2007 began nationwide campaigns, described by army officials as successful, to lure young men and women to join the armed forces.
