Grandmother's pit bulls kill 7-month-old

SAN ANTONIO , April 1 (UPI) -- A 7-month-old Texas boy died Tuesday after being bitten and mauled by his grandmother's two pit bulls.

The dogs also injured the grandmother when she tried to get them away from her grandson, the San Antonio Express-News reported. She had left the boy, Izaiah Gregory Cox, with the dogs in a bedroom when she went to fix a bottle for him.

The grandmother did get the dogs outside. When paramedics arrived, they were unable to enter the house until police got there and shot the dogs.

Family members said the dogs were generally friendly to the grandmother but aggressive with anyone else. They said the dogs were usually outside in a fenced area when she was caring for her grandson.

Larry Salazar, a neighbor, described the dogs as dangerous.

"Not even the mailman gets by that gate," Sanchez said. "I'm not surprised by the attack; I'm surprised that it took this long."

Police have not said whether the grandmother, who remained hospitalized, would be charged.
