MIAMI, April 1 (UPI) -- A Florida woman is trying to clear her 11-year-old son's credit record after someone used his Social Security number to obtain credit and spend, spend, spend.
Jake LeGette discovered he had a problem when he tried to open a bank account to deposit the money he had saved from gifts and doing chores, ABC News reported. The bank rejected him, saying someone was already using his Social Security number.
Lori LeGette, Jake's mother, said that her job as a police officer in the Miami area has not helped her untangle the mess.
The woman who has been using Jake's Social Security number operates in another part of Florida. LeGette said that she does not know whether the woman has simply been buying stuff for herself or committing additional crimes.
"But when you buy nine vehicles over a four-year period of time, you have to think there's something really involved, fraudulently," LeGette said.
The bank has allowed Jake to open his savings account and LeGette said she is putting a freeze on his Social Security number once she gets his record cleared.
