KABUL, Afghanistan, March 27 (UPI) -- An Afghan soldier shot and killed two coalition service members Friday in northern Afghanistan, U.S. officials said.
Military officials called the incident the first of its type "in recent memory," CNN reported. The news network said the Afghan soldier wounded a third coalition service member and then killed himself.
Afghan Minister of Defense Abdul Rahim Wardak said he was "saddened and deeply regretful this tragedy occurred" and that the incident was under investigation.
Neither the soldiers' identities nor nationalities were reported.
The report came on the same day as U.S. President Barack Obama unveiled plans to fight al-Qaida and the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan by, among other things, deploying 4,000 troops to train and improve Afghan security forces.
"For the first time, this will fully resource our effort to train and support the Afghan army and police," Obama said. "Every American unit in Afghanistan will be partnered with an Afghan unit, and we will seek additional trainers from our NATO allies to ensure that every Afghan unit has a coalition partner."
