Poll: Almost half in U.S. creationist
SALT LAKE CITY, March 26 (UPI) -- Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman has vetoed a bill that would have fined stores that sell violent or sexually explicit video games to minors.
The governor said Wednesday that the law, while it has a "laudable" purpose, is likely to lose a court challenge as written, the Salt Lake Tribune reported. He also suggested that retailers would stop using ratings on video games to avoid penalties.
"The unintended consequence of the bill would be that parents and children would have no labels to guide them in determining the age appropriateness of the goods or service," Huntsman said.
The bill passed both houses by large enough margins for an override.
State Rep. Michael Morley, like Huntsman a Republican, said that the bill was victim of lobbying and that Huntsman's staff did not study it carefully enough.
"I think it's simply a result of an e-mail campaign from a lot of gamers that misrepresent the bill," Morley said.
