Oakland school named for Obama

OAKLAND, Calif., March 26 (UPI) -- An alternative middle school in Oakland, Calif., has been renamed in honor of U.S. President Barack Obama.

The Los Angeles Times reported Thursday that Oakland Unified School District trustees voted unanimously Tuesday to rename the Alternative Learning Community in East Oakland as the Barack Obama Academy.

The name change was prompted by students, who said they felt stigmatized by the word "alternative."

The school joins a handful of other campuses that have been renamed in honor of the 44th president. Schools in Hempstead, N.Y., Cleveland and Compton, Calif., have been renamed in honor of Obama.
