Clinton wraps up Mexico trip

MEXICO CITY, March 26 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said her meeting with host Mexican President Felipe Calderon was productive, covering topics of mutual interest.

Their conversations covered "the economic situation that both our countries face," as well as preparations for next week's meeting of the Group of 20 leaders of industrialized and developing countries in London, Clinton said during a news conference in Mexico City with Mexican Foreign Secretary Patricia Espinosa.

Clinton and Calderon also discussed climate change and energy, as well as security issues and the upcoming Summit of the Americas, she said as she wrapped up her two-day visit to Mexico.

She repeated President Barack Obama's administration's commitment to help Mexico in its battle against drug traffickers saying "we have accepted that this is a co-responsibility."

"We know very well that the drug traffickers are motivated by the demand for illegal drugs in the United States, that they are armed by the transport of weapons from the United States to Mexico," she said, "therefore, we see this as a responsibility to assist the Mexican government and the Mexican people in defeating an enemy that is committing violence and disruption that is very harmful ... ."

She said Obama was committed to comprehensive immigration reform and was taking some actions through administrative changes.

"We have long said that we are both a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws, and therefore we believe strongly that there have to be changes made," Clinton said, "and we hope we'll be able to pursue those in the coming months."
