Teacher sentenced for killing student

OSAKA, Japan, March 24 (UPI) -- Prosecutors in Japan say a former school teacher was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years in prison for fatally stabbing a 12-year-old student.

Yu Hagino, 26, was convicted of killing the girl at a school in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, in December 2005, the Kyodo news agency reported.

Hagino initially had been sentenced to 18 years in prison but the Osaka High Court Tuesday ruled he had a diminished capacity at the time of the crime and should serve no more than 15 years, Kyodo reported.
