N.J. voters oppose licenses for illegals

TRENTON, N.J., March 24 (UPI) -- A majority of New Jersey residents do not believe illegal immigrants should get drivers' licenses or pay in-state college tuition rates, a poll finds.

The Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey poll was conducted in early February.

Almost two-thirds, 62 percent, of those surveyed said that illegal immigrants should not be issued drivers' licenses. Advocates say that doing so would make the state's highways safer because illegals would be more likely to be insured and could be tracked if they become involved in crashes.

"I just don't think they should have all the rights that legal citizens and occupants of the United States do," David Mitchell of Point Pleasant Beach told the Asbury Park Press. "We have to follow laws. ... If we're going to dismiss the law for them, we might as well dismiss all the laws."

Only 20 percent of those surveyed said that illegal immigrants should get the in-state break on tuition at state colleges. Only 32 percent said their children should get in-state rates, while 39 percent said that illegals should be barred from state colleges.

The poll has a margin of error of 3.5 percent.
