TEHRAN, March 23 (UPI) -- A funeral was conducted during the weekend for Khadije Sagha Khomeini, 93, wife of the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

A commemoration service was observed Sunday for Khomeini, who died Saturday after a long illness, the Islamic Republic News Agency, IRNA, reported Monday.

The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khameini, government officials, including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and the public attended the ceremony at Tehran University.

Khomeini was interred in a mausoleum in southern Tehran, where her husband, Sayyid Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini was buried in 1989. In 1979, the Iranian religious figure and leader of the 1979 Iranian Revolution overthrew the government of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the late Shah of Iran.
