NORTH LAWRENCE, N.Y., March 23 (UPI) -- A man charged with setting a fire that killed four people in Nassau County, N.Y., was motivated by jealousy, a relative of the victims claims.
Caleb Lacey, 19, believed his girlfriend was interested in Saul Preza, 19, who died in the fire, along with Preza's mother, Morena Vanegas 46, and her daughters Susanna, 9 and Andrea, 10, Preza's brother, Jose Borjas, told Newsday in a story published Monday.
Lacey "felt threatened by Saul. That's why he did it. That's the only reason," Borjas said Sunday.
Nassau County police officials have said Lacey, a volunteer fireman, allegedly started last month's fire because he wanted to appear to be a hero and rescue the building's occupants.
Lacey, who lived about 100 feet from the victims' home in North Lawrence, N.Y., has pleaded innocent to first-degree arson and four counts of second-degree murder.
