WASHINGTON, March 22 (UPI) -- The White House's chief economist Sunday predicted the struggling U.S. economy will begin growing by the end of 2009.
In an appearance on CNN's "State of the Union" news program, Christina Romer, chairwoman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, said the economy "will bottom out this year."
"I have every expectation, as do private forecasters, that we will bottom out this year and actually be growing again by the end of the year," Romer said.
She noted that in the nine weeks since President Barack Obama's inauguration, the White House has rolled out a series of programs aimed at boosting the U.S. economy, including initiatives to help the struggling housing market. Plans also are in the works to take bad loans and other so-called toxic assets off banks' hands.
"I don't think Wall Street is expecting the silver bullet," Romer said. "This is one more (initiative). It's a crucial piece to get those toxic assets off, but it is -- it is just part of it, and there will be more to come."
