ABC radio newsman George Weber slain

NEW YORK, March 22 (UPI) -- Investigators in New York think the death of ABC Radio newscaster George Weber was a homicide, ABC News reported Sunday.

Weber, 50, was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment Sunday morning by police responding to a call about a missing person. Officers found Weber with a wound to his neck, and Emergency Medical Services technicians responding to the scene pronounced him dead, ABC said.

Police were called because Weber had not reported for work the past two days and had not responded to repeated efforts to contact him.

Citing police sources, the New York Post reported there were no signs of forced entry but neighbors said Weber's apartment had been ransacked.

Steve Jones, vice president and general manager of ABC News Radio, issued a statement saying the company was "shocked and deeply saddened" by Weber's death.

"George Weber was a lifelong fan of radio," Jones said. "He was a consummate journalist with a successful radio career in New York at WABC, Los Angeles at KTLK and KMPC, San Francisco at KGO radio and Denver at KOA radio, among others."

Weber had been a news presenter on WABC's "Curtis and Kuby" morning show with Curtis Sliwa and Ron Kuby until 2008. Until his death he had been working as a freelance anchor at ABC News Radio.
