Pakistani chief justice to resume post

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, March 21 (UPI) -- Pakistani Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry has been reinstated after nationwide anti-government protests and resumes his duties this coming week, officials say.

Chaudhry, known for his independence, will resume his post Sunday following the retirement of incumbent Chief Justice Abdul Hamid Dogar Saturday without the traditional ceremonies, the Press Trust of India reported.

Dogar had been installed by then-President Pervez Musharraf after he fired Chaudhry and other judges after imposing emergency rule in 2007. Chaudhry vowed last week to restore the supremacy of the Pakistani Constitution.

The controversial Dogar spent his last day in the Supreme Court Friday meeting fellow judges and staffers while paying a farewell call on President Asif Ali Zardari, Dawn, Pakistan's English-language newspaper, reported.
