SACRAMENTO, March 20 (UPI) -- Sacramento will find shelter for as many as 150 homeless people who have been living in a tent city just north of the downtown area, officials say.

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson says the homeless encampment near the Blue Diamond Growers plant will be cleared and the area fenced off to prevent future encampments, The Sacramento Bee reported Friday.

Homeless people have been illegally camping in California's capital city for years but the situation drew national media attention after Oprah Winfrey featured it on her television show.

Johnson says the city has developed a plan to move the homeless into various types of temporary and permanent housing with funding for the project coming partly from local redevelopment money.

The plan will be presented to the Sacramento City Council Tuesday.

Not all of the tent dwellers are looking forward to moving, says the Los Angeles Times

"We're homeless and being evicted? Now I've heard everything," Tammie Day told the Times.
