BAIDOA, Somalia, March 19 (UPI) -- Islamic militants claimed to have killed 16 government troops Wednesday in a battle in southwestern Somalia.
The fighting between government troops and al-Shabab Muslims occurred in the Rabdhure district of the Bakol region, Shabelle Radio reported.
"We killed 16 soldiers, including top officials from those who attacked us today as far as we know, and we have captured many weapons from them," said Sheik Hassan Mohamed Ali, a regional head of the al-Shabab group.
He said one of the group's fighters was killed.
Al-Shabab recently retook control of several towns in southern and central Somalia after Ethiopian forces pulled out of Somalia in January, ending a two-year intervention.
