Second quake in 11 days hits Australia

KORUMBURRA, Australia, March 18 (UPI) -- The Australian state of Victoria was rocked by its second earthquake in 11 days Wednesday, seismologists said.

Officials said a 4.6-magnitude temblor struck near Korumburra, 60 miles east of Melbourne, shortly after 4 p.m., with residents telling the Australian Broadcasting Corp. their houses shook for up to 10 seconds, followed by as many as three aftershocks.

Seismologist Spiro Spiliopolous said it's impossible to tell if yet more earthquakes will strike Victoria.

"The answer is that we don't know. It's not possible to predict when earthquakes will occur," he told the ABC. "It's unusual to see two earthquakes the same size occur in the same location, although it's not rare, not unheard of."

"I felt the roof shaking," Chris Corr of the Korumburra Middle Hotel told the Melbourne Herald Sun. "The first time, it felt like there was a strange beast crawling across the roof … but this time, I knew what it was."
