Report: G20 protesters to target hotels

LONDON, March 18 (UPI) -- Hotels and other buildings housing world leaders attending next month's Group of 20 economic summit in London could become protest targets, sources say.

Scotland Yard is receiving intelligence reports indicating anti-globalization protesters using "guerrilla-style raid" tactics are laying plans to assault hotels and officials are responding with beefed-up security, The Times of London reported Wednesday without naming sources.

The newspaper said the London security operation at G20 will be the largest seen in the country since the G8 meeting at Gleneagles in July 2005, adding that all police vacations have been canceled for the April 2 summit. It said thousands of uniformed officers will be dispatched to prevent anarchists and other violent protesters from hijacking legitimate activities.

The Times cited what it called collaboration between militant environmentalists and anarchists on a series of demonstrations, which it said are being promoted with such slogans as "Storm the Banks" and "Bash a Banker."
