CHILLICOTHE, Ohio, March 18 (UPI) -- A lawsuit filed in Arizona claims the Petland chain of pet stores misrepresents the breeding characteristics of puppies sold in its stores.
The class-action lawsuit filed by the Humane Society of the United States in U.S. District Court in Phoenix accuses the company based in Chillicothe, Ohio, of selling animals purchased from puppy mills or puppy-mill brokers as professionally-bred puppies, the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch said Wednesday.
Monday's lawsuit filed by six people also names Missouri's Hunte Corp., which previously supplied Petland with puppies.
The plaintiffs accused Petland of unfair sales practices and asked to be compensated for puppies they purchased after the animals allegedly either became ill or were found to have congenital problems.
The Dispatch said the lawsuit also seeks triple damages for related veterinary bills.
"This is a continuing public-relations campaign to smear the good name of Petland," the company said in response to the lawsuit. Petland has 140 stores in the United States.
