AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, March 18 (UPI) -- A member of the Dutch parliament apologized Wednesday for a slur against Chinese people that he sent out on Twitter.

Radio Netherlands said MP Arend-Jan Boekestijn sent out an apology about referring to Chinese as "slit-eyes" while taking part in a Twitter discussion on the number of people who died in China while Mao Zedong was in power.

The radio network said Boekestijn quickly deleted the offending Tweet from his account but not before it had been snapped up and posted on other Web sites.

"I regret my remark about Chinese," he said in his apology. "I had no intention of offending anyone."
